Sex.com, the current Guinness World Record Holder for the world’s most expensive domain name, has launched.
The website, which dubs itself as a one-stop shop for today’s best and latest porn sites, sex aids, sex chats, and more, launched quietly this week.
Many in the internet industry have been wondering how Clover Holdings Ltd (the company that purchased the domain name for $13 million) would recoup its investment, and this is the first time the domain name has expanded beyond a parked page of ads since it was sold by Escom LLC in November 2010.
The site’s launch comes at a time when adult web addresses have been grabbing headlines.
Last month, as reported by Mike Berkens of TheDomains, the ICANN Board voted to approve the .XXX domain. According to ICM Registry (the company that will be launching the .XXX top level domain), those in the online adult entertainment industry and those supplying products or services to that industry are eligible to apply for a .xxx domain, which is currently in a pre-reservation phase.
