What is Schemer.com by Google?

Schemer by Google

WHOIS privacy was removed this week from the domain name schemer.com, revealing Google as the owner.

According to WHOIS records, it appears Google secretly acquired the domain name from its previous owner using MarkMonitor’s shell company ‘Brand Certified’ back in July.  Brand Certified is the same intermediary Google used to acquire Chromebox.comNetflix bought up its Qwikster domain names earlier this year using Brand Certified, as well.

Google appears to have plans for the domain schemer.com.

Today, if you type the web address http://schemer.com/ into your browser, you’ll be taken to the Google Accounts login page.  However, once you sign in using your Google username and password, a 403 error page appears with a message that says, “We’re sorry, but you do not have access to this page. That’s all we know.”

As of today, Google hasn’t made any announcements about a product or service called ‘Schemer’.

There is a trademark filing (Serial Number: 85368915) for ‘Schemer’ with the United States Patent and Trademark Office by Meevine, Inc, that was filed in July, about the same time Google quietly acquired the domain, but Meevine wasn’t the owner.  Meevine builds mobile products and apps.

In mid-October, Jonathan Nelson (co-founder of Meevine) wrote a post called Tips and Techniques of Finding a Good Product Name that discusses how the company went about picking ‘Gatherball’ to brand one of its products.  ‘Schemer’ is mentioned in the article.

“We’ve certainly found it great being able to claim all the Gatherballs out there, but our previous name (Schemer) was taken on every front. Sometimes it’s just worth it… but not often. Be careful though, don’t just rule out a domain because it’s already registered. Actually visit the domain and you’ll find probably half of them have either placeholder content or are clearly listed for sale. You and your domain could be joined forever for a very small hit to the savings account.”

I’ve reached out to Meevine also to see if there is any connection to Google, and will update this post if I hear back.

[Update 5 Dec. 8:  Schemer is currently in an invite-only beta period.  According to IGN, who partnered with Google to help consumers find things related to games and entertainment, Schemer is a platform that helps you discover things you didn’t even know you wanted to do.]

[Update 4 Nov. 11 at 1:14 p.m. ET:  Asa Bour, the domain’s previous owner replied to me by e-mail.  While he was unable to disclose the dollar amount, Asa did post a blog about the negotiations.

Jonathan Nelson (co-founder of Meevine) had made an offer on the name in the past, but the two couldn’t come to an agreement.  It was Google that finally made Asa an offer too good to refuse.

“I wanted enough to walk away or a nice steady stream of income over time. Another serious suitor came along. I had no idea who the company was but their offer revealed they had much deeper pockets. We haggled for a few weeks and reached an agreement. The deal was handled seamlessly via an escrow service. When the money appeared in my bank account it all felt unbelievable.”

You can read Asa’s story here.]

[Update 3 Nov. 11 at 5:51 a.m. ET:  Robin Wauters over at TechCrunch is following the story and has contacted Google.]

[Update 2 at 5:47 a.m. ET:  I’ve reached out to the previous owner of the domain E. Asa Bour, to see if I can get more details on the sales price or negotiations that took place.]

[Update 1 at 5:25 a.m. ET:  There doesn’t appear to be any connection between Google and Meevine.  Paul Watts, CEO & Co-Founder of Meevine, replied via email saying, “I know about as much as you know at this point…”]

Google registers ‘Maps Matter’ domain names

Maps Matter

With changes being released for Google Maps like business interiors in Street View, it appears an online marketing campaign might be in store for the search engine giant.

On October 28, 2011, Google registered a handful of domains like MapsMatter.com and WhyMapsMatter.com.

While neither MapsMatter.com nor WhyMapsMatter.com resolve to a web page as of yet, given the timing of the registrations coinciding with enhancements to Street View and the plug being pulled on unlimited access to its API, it’s safe to say Google is planning to unveil something soon on the new web addresses.

Here’s a look at the WHOIS record for MapsMatter.com, registered through the brand protection company MarkMonitor.

WorldWondersProject.com: Google buys domain for secret new site [UPDATED]

Pyramids of Giza and Sphinx

In September I wrote about Google acquiring the domain name OneWorldManyStories.com after the domain name had expired.

Then, in early October, Google unveiled the ‘One World Many Stories’ website that showcases stories of how people use Google Earth to discover more about the world.  The site was launched in celebration of Google Earth being downloaded 1 billion times.

Now it appears Google has another secretive project underway called the “World Wonders Project”, that if I had to guess, I’d say has something to do with Google Earth and the Wonders of the World.

Google registered the domain names WorldWondersProject.com and WorldWondersProject.net on October 12 through MarkMonitor.

Here’s a look at the Whois record.

[Update 1, Oct. 28, 2012:.  It now appears Google has acquired the domain WorldWonders.org [WHOIS] from BuyDomains using the same well-known internet brand protection company MarkMonitor as the intermediary.  The name transferred from BuyDomains to MarkMonitor this week.  According to web cache, the purchase price was only $2,088.]

Is Google launching an initiative for war veterans? [UPDATED]

With President Obama announcing the end of the Iraq war and his challenge to U.S. businesses to hire 100,000 veterans or their spouses, it appears Google might be stepping up to the plate to assist Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans in their transition to the civilian workforce.

Yesterday, on the same day of the President’s announcement that all troops will be withdrawn from Iraq by the end of 2011, Google registered half a dozen domains related to ‘Google for Veterans’ like googleforveterans.com, googleveterans.com, and googleforvets.com.

The full list of registrations include:

googleforveterans.com
googleforveterans.org
googleforvets.com
googleveterans.com
googleveterans.org
googlevets.com

Google certainly wouldn’t be the first company to launch an initiative.

Last March, Microsoft for example, building on its Elevate America program, announced an initiative to help veterans and their spouses prepare for the civilian work force.

The company hasn’t said anything official about its “Google for Veterans” program.  Google may be planning the announcement to coincide with Veterans Day 2011, which is only a few weeks away.

Update on November 11 @ 9:00am EST: Google has unveiled its ‘Google for veterans and families’ website on http://googleforveterans.com/.  Google writes: “This site was made by some veterans, family of veterans and friends who work at Google. We understand the challenges of serving, coming home and transitioning to civilian life. We’ve been there. Some of us are still figuring it out. Here are some free Google products we’ve gathered together that have made our lives easier. Hopefully, they can do the same for you.”

Google wants to ‘Get your folks online’ too, not just businesses

Get Your Folks Online

Google recently unveiled its program to help get Virginia businesses online, in an easy, free, and fast way with no catch and no cost.  It did something similar in Texas back in July after registering a number of ‘Get Online’ domains in June that covered all fifty states.

If all goes according to Google’s plans based on domain registrations, your parents will be able to get online for free, too.

Google purchased GetYourFolksonline.com, GetYourFolksonline.net, and GetYourFolksOnline.org on September 26, 2011.

While Google hasn’t announced anything official yet, it’s possible the program could be for helping your parents who have businesses.  Or, maybe Google wants you to help get your parents online to start using their social network Google+.

At the time of this story, the web addresses do not resolve to a page.

Following is the Whois record for Getyourfolksonline.com.
