Google reveals it got Chromebox.com via secret intermediary, launch imminent?

Chromebox

Google officially launched its Chrome OS laptops called Chromebooks on June 15, but there is still no official release date for its desktop version of the Chrome OS called Chromebox announced back in May.  Though Google did acquire several related domain names around Chromebook and Chromebox around the same time as Google I/O 2011, one name it didn’t own was Chromebox.com.

According to Whois records, Google acquired the domain Chromebox.com through MarkMonitor’s secret shell company Brand Certified Inc in August (price unknown).  Then on September 23, 2011, the registrant information was updated on Chromebox.com, revealing Google as the owner.

Is the update to the Whois record and transfer to Google’s domain servers a sign of an imminent launch?

Here’s a look at the Whois record.

Google registers a slew of API, Third Party and Untrusted Content domains

Google Domain Registrations September 12, 2011

Recently there has been some news about a delay in Google releasing the Google+ API (application programming interface) to developers, unless you happen to be a “Trusted Tester”, then the wait may be days instead of months.

Now just days after the blog activity, Google has gone ahead and registered several domains related to APIs, third party content, and untrusted content.

The domains include web addresses such as GoogleAPIscontent.com, GoogleThirdParties.com, and GoogleUntrusted.com.

Here’s a look at the full list of domain names.

http://whois.domaintools.com/googleuntrustedcontent.com

I’m not sure these registrations mean anything more than Google purchasing names as part of their IP strategy or whether information will be published to any of them online.  At the time of this story, none of the URLs resolve to a website.

Google acquires One World Many Stories domain for an unknown project

One World Many Stories

While Google regularly acquires domain names with ‘Google’ in them, the company occasionally purchases other domains that have no direct tie to the company’s products.

That’s what happened earlier this month when OneWorldManyStories.com changed owners from the magical ventriloquist Steve Taylor to the search engine giant Google Inc.

Google hasn’t announced any plans for the web address, but it already has plenty of names it owns that sit unused.  So this is yet another domain that may end up collecting dust.

For those of you wondering who Steve Taylor is, he’s a magical ventriloquist who helps motivate young people to read and hosts The “One World – Many Stories” Magic & Ventriloquism Show! with Rudy O’Riley.  According to Steve’s website found at stevetaylorpro.com, he has been performing since the age of twelve and his summer shows have been sold out for the past fifteen years.

It appears the domain name may have expired, and then was acquired by Google through MarkMonitor.  I’ve reached out to Steve Taylor to find out more information.

Here’s a look at the updated Whois record.

Why did Google buy Howtogomo.com?

Gmail email intervention

Google went off and purchased the domain names Howtogomo.com, Howtogomo.net, and Howtogomo.org this week.

I have no clue what to expect with these registrations, but I can imagine it may be another Google marketing campaign to convince people to use one of its products as it did with the web address EmailIntervention.com.

The “Email Intervention” campaign (pictured above) went live in late July in an attempt by Google to attract more users to Gmail.  To date, almost 800,000 interventions have been sent according to the home page.

Maybe “GOMO” refers to “Get over it, Move on” and will be used somehow to draw new users to its Google+ social networking service.

Who knows?

All three domain names were registered on September 1, 2011.
