Is Riot Games working on a top secret game project called “Project 425”?

Sometime in the mid-2000s, the domain name Project425.com was privately registered through the registrar Melbourne IT.  The organization behind the registration was unknown until November 2008, when the Whois record showed Riot Games President Marc Merrill as the name’s owner.

Merrill continued to renew the domain name each year, but this past week it underwent some changes, most notably it transferred to the internet brand protection company MarkMonitor and instead of being renewed on an annual basis, the name was renewed through March 2015.

And as you can see from the Whois record, Riot Games is the outright owner.

So, what exactly is “Project 425”?

Right now, I don’t know anything about the project, because the secret of “Project 425” is hidden behind a password-protected website.  Currently, when you go to the web address http://project425.com, you’re asked for a username and password.

A senior League of Legends community member pointed out late last year, that Riot Games owns several random domains including names like onslaughtgame.net (Whois) and InstituteofWar.org (Whois).

However, unlike Project425.com which actually is some type of website, the other domain names either don’t resolve to a web page or are parked at a registrar like Go Daddy and display ads.

It’s no secret that Riot Games is working on other projects, but what’s in store will likely remain unknown up until its launch.

Sequel to be called Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare according to domains

It looks like the folks at PopCap Games have settled on a title to Plants vs. Zombies 2, due out in the Spring of 2013.

The company has registered a slew of domain names like GardenWarfare.net, PlantsvsZombiesGardenWarfare.com, and PvZGardenWarfare.com.

In August, PopCap Games officially announced Plants vs. Zombies 2 in a press release, but revealed no details about the game’s name.

While the title seems more than fitting, oddly enough, a Twitter user suggested the name to @PopCap back in June.  However, it’s unknown whether the company took the advice or already had plans for the title.

At the time of this story, nothing official has been put out by PopCap, or its owner Electronic Arts.

Currently, none of the domains resolve to a web page.

New RIM domains hint at BlackBerry 10 apps like Flick, Newsstand, Peek & more

Earlier this month, a photo of the upcoming BlackBerry 10 L-Series smartphone was leaked online that hinted at some new apps.

Now, RIM has registered several domains that likely reveal more about the lineup of apps including Flick, Flow, Hub, Keyboard, Newsstand, Peek, PlayOn, Remember, Story Maker, Time Shift, BBM Video, BBM Voice, and Voice Control.

The leaked photo of the device that surfaced on September 3, showed several apps including Facebook, Pictures, Remember, Maps and Story Maker.  While the photo didn’t offer many details, RIM’s latest round of domain registrations may provide more clues.

On September 14, Research In Motion Limited, bought up dozens of names through the brand protection company MarkMonitor.

The list of domains includes names like BlackBerryFlick.com (Whois), BlackBerryPeek.com (Whois), BlackBerryPlayOn.com (Whois), BlackBerryRemember.com (Whois), BBMVideo.com (Whois), BlackBerryStoryMaker.com (Whois), BlackBerryTimeShift.com (Whois), and BlackBerryVoiceControl.com (Whois).

The majority of the names were registered publicly to RIM, like BlackBerryPeek.com.

UPDATE 1 – SEP. 16, 2012:  You may have noticed that BlackBerryFlow.com was missing from the list.  The name was owned by Kevin Michaluk, the Founder and Editor In Chief of CrackBerry.com, as recent as July 2012.  According to Whois history, Research In Motion acquired the name from Michaluk in late July.  It’s unknown whether RIM paid cash for the name or if it was simply handed over.  CrackBerry.com is one of the most trafficked BlackBerry community sites on the internet.  Quantcast reports the site gets over 8 million monthly visitors.  I’ve reached out to Kevin by email to learn more about the transaction and will update this post if I hear back.

Microsoft acquires Halo 7, Halo 8 & Halo 9 domains via brand protection company

With all the Microsoft video game talk about Halo 4 that is scheduled to be released on November 6, 2012, Microsoft is looking to the future and working to protect its Halo brand online.

This week, the company acquired several more domain names centering around its cash cow Halo, hinting that the franchise will be around for years to come.

Through the internet brand protection company MarkMonitor, Microsoft has apparently acquired the domains halo7.net (Whois), halo7.org (Whois), halo8.org (Whois), halo9.net (Whois) and halo9.org (Whois).

It’s unknown whether Microsoft opened its checkbook to get the names and it’ll likely remain that way.  History has shown that the terms of agreement between Microsoft and private domain sellers is not disclosed publicly.

Each of the newly acquired names is registered to DNStination Inc, a Whois privacy service administered by MarkMonitor.  The change in ownership took place within the last 48 hours.

Microsoft has had a busy twelve months acquiring Halo-related domain names.

In March of this year, it secretly acquired Halo5.com and Halo9.com from their previous owners using Corporation Service Company’s Name Rally.

In 2011, Microsoft acquired Halo4.com for an undisclosed amount from its previous owner.

So, what does Microsoft’s Halo dotcom scorecard look like?

300 prequel renamed – “300: Rise of An Empire” domains registered [UPDATED]

UPDATE – SEP. 13, 2012:  Box Office Mojo has also backed up speculation that the 300 prequel will now be called “300: Rise of An Empire”.  Several hours after this story was originally published, Box Office Mojo posted the movie title change to its website from “Untitled ‘300’ Sequel” to “300: Rise of An Empire”.

ORIGINAL STORY – SEP. 12, 2012 @ 4:21 AM EST: Is the upcoming prequel to 300 called ‘300: Battle of Artemisia’ getting a new title?

There appears to be a possibility that the film may be renamed.

Sparking speculation are some interesting domain registrations made this week by the brand protection company MarkMonitor, the same firm responsible for registering the Battle of Artemisa names back in January of this year.

The list of new domains registered privately by MarkMonitor on September 10, 2012, include 300-riseofanempire.com (Whois), 300riseofanempire.com (Whois), 300theriseofanempire.com (Whois) and RiseofanEmpire.com (Whois).

Each name was registered anonymously using MarkMonitor’s Whois privacy service DNStination, but you can bet the company behind the names is Warner Bros.  Warner Bros.’ very own warnerbros.com (Whois) is managed through MarkMonitor.

If the film is retitled, it wouldn’t be the first time.

In June 2011, Deadline reported that the 300 prequel, first known as “Xerxes”, would be retitled to 300: Battle of Artemisia.

One thing is for sure, “Rise of An Empire” is much easier to spell than “Battle of Artemisia”, but if the name is changing, that’s probably not the only driver.

Recent 300 buzz focused on news that Gerard Butler would not be appearing in the Warner Bros. film.  Butler told an MTV reporter, “They’re filming [the ‘300’ sequel] right now. I wish them the best, but it didn’t [work out]. It wasn’t really my thing.”

At the time of this story, none of the new domains resolve to a web page.  A quick check of other top level domains, shows that MarkMonitor only pursued the .coms, leaving other domains available.

The 300 prequel, whatever it is called, is scheduled to be in theaters on August 2, 2013.
