Neither Sony, Nintendo, nor Microsoft own the domains for their next consoles

xbox 720

The console wars are heating up, but there’s just one problem: the three major companies don’t own the matching domains to their next-generation consoles.

Nintendo doesn’t own WiiU.com, Sony doesn’t own Playstation4.com, and Microsoft doesn’t own Xbox720.com.

Will the companies submit a domain dispute, file an anti-cybersquatting lawsuit, or pay a large sum of cash to get the domains?  Well, it’s unknown whether Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo are considering any of these options, but what is known is that owning the domain names couldn’t their hurt online marketing efforts as the console wars heat up.

That being said, how are the domain names being used today?

Today, Playstation4.com re-directs to PSX Extreme, a video game website that has been covering Sony Playstation news for years.  PSXExtreme.com and Playstation4.com are both owned by Poise Media Inc., according to WHOIS records.  The domain was first registered in 1998, but Poise Media didn’t acquire the name until late 2008.

Xbox720.com is registered to a Jeremiah Germany of New York, who monetizes the domain using Google Adsense for Domains.  Over the years, the domain has been host to a number of different sites ranging from a Les Paul guitars site in 2006 to a Google Custom Search page in 2008.  However, since 2009 it appears the owner of Xbox720.com has been earning money using Google Adsense for Domains.

The owner of WiiU.com, who remains hidden behind WHOIS privacy, has the site set up as a Shopping.com affiliate web page.  I wrote about WiiU.com back in June, after Nintendo announced the console at E3 without owning the domain.  In August, Nintendo filed nearly 20 trademark applications (several including images) with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for the word Wii U.

All three console companies have used a variety of methods in the past to reclaim trademarked names, and in recent years, they have often filed complaints under the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP).

In nearly all the complaints, the domain names have been ordered transferred.  So given the track record to date, it’s likely when the trademark lawyers finally get around to going after these domains, they’ll use the UDRP.

Recently, Nintendo gained the rights to SuperMario.com, over 25 years since it had released Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros.  The company filed a complaint with WIPO which it won in late September.

Microsoft has filed and won dozens of Xbox-related domain disputes going back to 2003.

And though Sony Computer Entertainment has only filed a handful of disputes, it has won all 4 that it did submit.  Those cases involved: playstationx.com, sonyplaystation2.com, sonyps2.com, psone.com, pspcn.com,  and pspmovie.net.

Sometimes, however when companies want a domain and don’t want to risk losing a dispute or are impatient for the time it takes time for proceedings to complete, they will pay cash — as Microsoft likely did with Halo4.com.

I’ve reached out to the owner of each domain name to see if they’ve been contacted by the respective console company, and will update this post if I hear back.

Bingcubator.com: Is Microsoft creating a new incubator for ideas on search?

bingcubator

Microsoft is always trying to gain more of the search market share, and with competitors like Google and Yahoo!, it may be turning to a broader audience to find new technologies to incorporate into its own search engine.

So is Microsoft planning to launch an incubator focused on Bing like it has done with its DevLabs?

It appears Microsoft has tried to quietly register the domain names Bingcubator.com and Bingcubator.net through the internet brand protection company MarkMonitor.

Although the actual owner’s name is hidden, both domain names were registered on November 15th to DNstination Inc., the WHOIS privacy service provided by MarkMonitor.  But you can guarantee the names are owned by Microsoft, as Microsoft is a client of MarkMonitor and its own Bing.com is registered with the company.

While it’s speculation, an incubator that connects Microsoft with developers who want to see their ideas integrated with the search engine, seems like a very good possibility.

In mid October, Microsoft launched Bing Booster, aimed at helping startups.  Now it looks like the program could be expanding with Bingcubator.

It’s also possible that Bingcubator could be an entirely separate program, that sends a clear message to its competition that it wants any and all developers (not just startups) to help the company innovate its search engine technology.

At the time of this story, neither Bingcubator.com nor Bingcubator.net resolve to a web page.

Microsoft to release the Xbox Kinect Accelerator; it registered the domains

Xbox Kinect

With the one year anniversary of the debut of the Kinect taking place earlier this month, a lot of news has been coming out on the motion sensing device for the Xbox 360.

One of the announcements is that the Kinect SDK for Windows, which enables developers to create new uses for the Kinect, will be available commercially in early 2012.

With all the activity and buzz, it also looks like other features for the Kinect will be available for developers called the “Xbox Kinect Accelerator”, according to two recent domain registrations by Microsoft.

On November 9th, the company registered XboxKinectAccelerator.com and XboxKinectAccelerator.net.

Nothing has been announced by Microsoft yet.

It’s possible the Xbox Kinect Accelerator could be something similar to the Microsoft Research Accelerator which is used by programmers to help accelerate code execution.

It could also be an accessory for the device or a Startup Camp to get developers up to speed on programming, but until Microsoft reveals more information, nothing will be known for sure.

[Update 2 November 18, 2011: Microsoft has officially launched the site.  “If you are a developer or existing team/startup focused on building a business that takes advantage of the Kinect and Natural User Interface technologies, then the Kinect Accelerator is where you need to be. Through this program, Microsoft is supporting entrepreneurs, engineers and innovators like you to bring to life a wide range of business ideas that leverage the limitless possibilities Kinect enables. Following a competitive screening process, ten finalists will be chosen for this unique three month incubation program running from March to May, 2012 in Seattle, WA. The Kinect Accelerator is “powered by TechStars” using the same mentor-driven methodology pioneered and proven in New York, Boulder, Seattle and Boston. Mentors for the Kinect Accelerator include a broad base of entrepreneurs and venture capitalists in the industry as well as executives from Microsoft Studios, XBOX, Microsoft Research and other Microsoft organizations.”  More here.]

[Update 1 November 15, 2011 at 3:17am EST:  Microsoft has now registered the domains KinectAccelerator.com, KinectAccelerator.net and KinectAccelerator.org.]

Microsoft developing “30 to Launch” Windows Phone app, but what is it?

30 to Launch Windows Phone app

Microsoft appears to be developing a new Windows Phone app called ’30 to Launch’.

On November 4 according to WHOIS records, Microsoft registered the domain names 30toLaunch.com, 30toLaunch.net, 30toLaunchWindowsPhoneapp.com, and 30toLaunchWindowsPhoneapp.net.

All of the domains were registered through the internet brand protection company MarkMonitor.

No details are available on exactly what ’30 to Launch’ will be.

No trademark applications have been filed and the only exact match domains taken, are the ones Microsoft registered: 30toLaunch.com and 30toLaunch.net, neither of which resolve to a website at the time of this story.

As far as social media usernames, twitter.com/30toLaunch went online for a very short time in 2009, but is no longer active.  ’30 to Launch’ was setup as a collaborative project between Sarah Lewis and Alex Terry that asked users, “What would you do if you had 30 days left to live?”

Microsoft may launch a living monument online for Halo: Combat Evolved remake

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary

[Updated, Nov. 1, 2:40pm EST: The Halo Monument website went online, temporarily.  I took a screen shot before the site was taken down by Microsoft.]

**

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is set to be released on November 15th for the Xbox 360.

Earlier this week, Microsoft registered the domain names HaloLivingMonument.com and HaloLivingMonument.net.

So is Microsoft planning to launch a website as part of its marketing campaign?  In 2010, Microsoft launched the Remember Reach website as part of its online marketing campaign for Halo: Reach.  The site had visitors create a “living monument” of lights to honor Noble team members.

Or better yet, is Microsoft planning to launch a “living monument” online for players who achieve legendary feats in the game?

It appears as if the “Living Monument” domain registrations may have something to do with the achievements that can be unlocked in the game.

The achievement list was recently unveiled by Xbox who reported: “…you can now get an achievement if you complete The Library on Legendary in 30 minutes or less. No small feat but if you pull it off, you will then gain a monument to all your sins. I mean, a virtual monument for surviving the experience.”

Here’s a look at the WHOIS record for HaloLivingMonument.com.
