Insidious 2 is in the works according to domain registrations by Sony Pictures

Insidious 2 movie

A sequel appears to be in the works for the best cost-to-gross ratio movie of the year “Insidious”.

Horror movie fans may have something to look forward to in 2012 after Sony Pictures hinted that “Insidious 2” is in production, after the company registered a handful of domains like Insidious2movie.com, Insidious2.net, and Insidious2-movie.net.

All three domain names were registered on November 28, 2011, through the internet brand protection company MarkMonitor.

“Insidious” cost $1.5 million to produce and worldwide grossed $97,009,150.

Last May, rumors of a sequel began swirling around the internet, but nothing definite was ever announced.

At the time of this posting, Sony Pictures has not said anything official, nor do any of the domains resolve to a web page.

[Update 1 on February 2, 2012: Insidious 2 has been announced and is scheduled to be released in 2013, reports Variety.]

New Pinocchio film? Domains secretly registered by brand protection company

Pinocchio film

It’s only speculation, but according to several new domain registrations made through the internet brand protection company MarkMonitor, it appears a new Pinocchio film could be in the works.

On November 22, pinocchio-the-movie.com, pinocchiofilm.com, pinocchiothefilm.com, and thepinocchiomovie.com, were all privately registered to DNstination Inc, the WHOIS privacy service provided by MarkMonitor.

Currently, none of the domain names resolve to a web page.

While the company behind the names is not officially known, MarkMonitor is well-known for providing brand protection services to more than half the Fortune 100 companies in the world.  And considering Disney Enterprises, Inc. owns several “Pinocchio” trademarks, it’s nearly certain that Disney is the registrant.

Though nothing has been officially announced by Disney, the new domain registrations hint at a new movie in the making.

At the same time the Pinocchio domains were registered, another batch of names were privately registered with MarkMonitor, alluding to another film called “The Gold Mist”.  Here’s a look at those domain registrations:

Is the Dreamworks Animation film ‘Rise of the Guardians’ getting a new title?

Rise of the Guardians: Jack Frost

It appears DreamWorks Animation’s Rise of the Guardians set to release in November 2012 may be getting a new name – one that more highlights the film’s lead character ‘Jack Frost’ played by Chris Pine.

Formerly titled The Guardians of Childhood, then changed to Rise of the Guardians, in the past week DreamWorks Animation has registered well over a dozen domain names that hint at the name change like dreamworksriseoftheguardians-jackfrost.com, jackfrost.info, riseoftheguardians-jack.com and many more.

Here’s a look at several of the domain names acquired this week by DreamWorks Animation:

According to the press release issued last January by DreamWorks, the epic 3D adventure will also star Alec Baldwin as North (Santa Claus), Hugh Jackman as Bunnymund (Easter Bunny), Isla Fisher as Tooth (Tooth Fairy) and Jude Law as Pitch (The Boogeyman).

[Updated on November 22, 2011 at 4:35am EST:  Looks like the domain names have nothing to do with the film title. DreamWorks Animation registered several more names with characters from the film in the domain like riseoftheguardians-sandman.biz, riseoftheguardians-bunnymund.biz, and riseoftheguardians-north.org]

Paramount working on Phantoms movie?

Phantoms movie

Paramount Pictures, among many of its projects, is said to be working on film sequels to Transformers and Paranormal Activity, as well as a reboot of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

It looks like another film is in the pipeline for Paramount called “Phantoms” according to recent domain name registrations.

On November 11th, Paramount Pictures registered the domains Phantomsmovie.com and Phantomsthemovie.com through the internet brand protection company MarkMonitor.

In 1998, Dimension Films released its own “Phantoms” horror film adapted from the 1983 novel by Dean Koontz that starred Ben Affleck.  According to Box Office Mojo, the film only grossed $5,624,282 domestically.

It’s unkown whether Paramount Pictures has acquired the rights to “Phantoms” for a remake or whether Paramount has its own original screenplay.

Lucasfilm registers handful of ‘Star Wars: Identities’ domain names [UPDATED]

Star Wars: Identities

This week, Lucasfilm registered a handful of domain names hinting at something new on the way for the Star Wars franchise called ‘Star Wars: Identities’.

Three domain names were registered on November 7th through Corporation Service Company, a brand protection service: StarWarsIdentities.com, StarWarsIdentites.com (typo) and sw-id.com.

No information has been released on ‘Star Wars: Identities’ by Lucasfilm as of yet.

Though it’s a stretch to speculate that ‘Star Wars: Identities’ could be a new film in a sequel trilogy, George Lucas has long denied plans of making Episodes VII, VIII and IX.

Could ‘Star Wars: Identities’ be slated for an animated series, DVD, or video game?

‘Star Wars: Identities’ sounds interesting, but I guess we’ll have to wait and see for Lucasfilm to comment.

Here’s a look at the WHOIS record for StarWarsIdentities.com.
