As others have reported when this story broke, Patrick’s SearchEngineOptimization.net wasn’t even cached in Google – at the time of this posting, the URL is indexed by Google.  It’s not even close to showing up in top 10, or 20, or even 50 Results pages – but that’s OK, Patrick has a 1-year plan to get his URL to the top of Google Search Results Page 1. 

Patrick has launched a blog using WordPress on the domain name – and chances are over the next few months, you’ll be seeing some changes. 

What’s Patrick’s goal behind this big gamble?

The idea for SearchEngineOptimization.net was to create a free SEO learning center where the teaching was done in a unique way.  The site will be a living case study chronicling the success or failure of ranking this very site for “search engine optimization”.  It will walk you through the steps I am taking to rank this site and track the results with full transparency.

I recently (over?)paid $62,500 for the domain SearchEngineOptimization.net  It was a parked domain that was not even cached in Google.   My goal is to take a domain that at the time of purchase is not even indexed in Google (so does not rank for anything) to #1 for “search engine optimization” within 365 days and teach visitors exactly how I did it (or failed to do it) along the way!  I will cover such topics as: Keyword research, Domain research and diligence, Domain negotiation, On page optimization, Link building, Tracking success, etc, etc.

DO IT YOURSELF! SEO for the rest of us

Patrick is also launching DIYSEO.com in early 2010 – with the goal of helping the rest of us with SEO – those us with very very small budgets.  And there’s a blog already online in lieu of a site.

But what about the small business that can budget only $500 and 25 hours per year towards online marketing?

At DIYSEO we are going after a different market in a very different way.  Andy and I both get many inquiries every week from small business owners (think real estate agents, small car dealers, restaurants, and part-time entrepreneurs) looking to get better exposure in organic search.  We have devised a way to give that expert advice to small business owners in a semi-automated yet highly customized format.

If you’re in our boat, with a limited budget, limited expertise and certainly limited good domain names – if we listened to all the skeptics, we wouldn’t be here.  There are probably a ton of Industry experts cringing at the thought of anyone paying this kind of money for a Dotnet – but chances are Patrick knows what he’s talking about, and he’s not afraid to put his money where his mouth is.

After all, he sold a very successful business “Text Link Ads” to MediaWhiz – and the URL for the website is text-link-ads.com.

Dutch Boyd, Domainer and WSOP Winner, must have made a KILLING selling PokerHost.net to PokerHost.com after he won WIPO

One can only imagine how much Poker Host Inc finally paid Dutch Boyd for the name. But it had to be BIG - considering Poker Host not only unsuccessfully tried to hijack the name at WIPO - but without the .net, they were basically blocked from advertising their brand on T.V.

Last year when PokerHost.com filed a UDRP complaint for the domain name PokerHost.net which was registered by WSOP Bracelet Winner and Domainer Dutch Boyd – they lost. Not only did they lose the case, but Dutch Boyd who owns thousands of domain names himself, won a reverse domain hijacking charge.

Andrew Allemann from Domain Name Wire has details about the actual case and the reverse domain hijacking charge which dates back to November/December 2008.

Dutch Boyd posted the story of his battle with Poker Host Inc on DutchBoyd.com and PokerHost.net.  He even started a gripe site on the domain. While he posted updates on the battle with Poker Host on PokerHost.net, he claimed that if Poker Host Inc had just made him a reasonable offer on the domain before threatening him at a Casino and with the UDRP that he would’ve sold the name.

That was then, this is now

After Dutch Boyd won WIPO and slamdunked it with a reverse domain hijacking charge – the price of PokerHost.net shot up, leaving no doubt that if the name was ever sold to Poker Host Inc that Dutch would make a killing

There’s no doubt that PokerHost Inc now owns PokerHost.net.  It looks like the name changed hands in the Spring (5/15/2009) – about five months after the WIPO decision in favor of Dutch Boyd. While we can’t seem to find any news of the transaction, Poker Host Inc now runs a FREE version of their .com online poker site on the .net extension.

The Company pissed off Dutch Boyd pretty good.  

Although you can’t read the archives that were originally posted on PokerHost.net – you can still scour DutchBoyd.com for stories. Here’s a link to his first posts on the issue.

Why do Online Poker Rooms need the .NET?

If you’re a fan of Poker, you’ve probably noticed players on TV wearing t-shirts and hats stamped with the .net of the Online Poker Room. In the US, it is illegal to advertise gambling on TV, but if you can create a FREE (non-Cash version) sister site on the .net extension for example, then you can advertise. Most online Poker Rooms follow this model using the DotNet extension. Leaving their .com for cash players, but drawing in more traffic through advertising channels with their FREE .net version.

Twitter and Domaining: What Some Skeptics Call a Fad, We like to call “Good Business”

Although it might seem like just another fad to the cynical users - the boom of Twitter on the internet works out great for domainers for a number reasons. With some bloggers earning thousands in Sponsored Tweets, organizations bringing awareness to their brand (even NASA), or simply having conversations with others you might never get a chance to meet in person --- it's wonderful.

Twitter skeptics can be pretty rowdy.  They claim they don’t see the value of using another social networking tool, despite the popularity of Twitter and the rising numbers.  They claim they don’t get the idea about following people or having people follow them back and that it’s just a waste of time. 

A lot of the skeptics say, “Who cares what other people are doing?”

Well, you’d be surprised what other people are doing – especially when they’re trying to do the same thing you’re doing in the Domaining business and they’re tweeting about it.

Getting Domain Development Help Through Twitter

We have tons of followers now, nearly 25,000 on Twitter for our Domaining account – which translates into traffic each and every time we send out a link. Whether it’s one visitor or a hundred visitors – it works out great for us, because we haven’t paid a single penny for advertising.

Last night we decided to ask our Twitter friends for HELP with SEO on one of our websites — ArmyVehicles.com – and the response was extraordinary.  Within seconds (not minutes) dozens of people were crawling ArmyVehicles.com providing us with ways to improve the SEO on the website. Not just regular readers with no background in SEO or website development, but people with years of experience in both fields.
