Amazon spins off Kindle Fire products into separate company called Seesaw?

Seesaw LLC

Amazon appears to be spinning off its Kindle Fire business under a separate new company called Seesaw.

According to recent trademark filings for the Kindle Fire and Amazon Silk with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the applicant behind each application isn’t Amazon, it’s Seesaw LLC.

All five trademarks were filed by Seesaw LLC and the attorney of record listed on each application is the same attorney as many of Amazon’s own filings:  Purvi J. Patel of Haynes and Booone, LLP.

While Amazon has made no public statement about this apparent spin-off, one can imagine if it really is the case of a separate company, it is so Amazon can make the necessary investments into its Kindle Fire and other mobile products that may be developed under Seesaw LLC.

There are currently five trademark applications by Seesaw LLC, all filed at the end of September with the USPTO.

AMAZON SILK Serial Number: 85435365
AMAZON SILK Serial Number: 85435357
KINDLE FIRE Serial Number: 85434021
KINDLE FIRE Serial Number: 85433969
KINDLE FIRE Serial Number: 85433968

[Update 1, October 8, 2011 1:03PM EST:  As CNN tech writer @MarkMilian points out in a tweet, “Amazon getting trademarks under a holding co. does not mean it’s splitting. Magic Trackpad registered to Slate Computing.”]

Amazon goes on a massive buying spree, buys over 500 Kindle Fire & Silk domains

Kindle Fire

The announcement of the all-new Kindle Fire and Silk browser set to be released on November 15, 2011, has ignited a massive domain name buying spree by Amazon.

On the very same day Amazon unveiled the Kindle Fire, the company registered well over 500 domain names related to the Kindle Fire and Silk browser products, through the brand protection company MarkMonitor.

The names range from 3gKindleFire.com to KindleFireClouddrive.com, and SilkSmartphones.com to SilkHTML5.com

While many of the registrations are certainly defensive in nature, some of the registrations may hint at future plans for Amazon’s newest products.

Because the list of registrations is so long, you can view the registrations here.

Why did Amazon register the domain name AmazonCamperForce.com?

Amazon Camper Force

The big story for Amazon is that the company is holding a press conference on Wednesday, September 28th in New York City and the rumor is that Amazon will be launching its tablet at the event.

Not that this has anything to do with the upcoming press conference, but Amazon has made a strange domain purchase this week: AmazonCamperForce.com.

The domain name was purchased by Amazon’s Legal Department on September 22, 2011 through MarkMonitor.

This is the first time the web address has ever been registered and Amazon didn’t bother registering the .net or .org version of the name.

Care to take a guess as to what the domain name stands for?
