Flying Online tells company story on its site through purchase of domains: UsedAirplanes.com, Flying.com (more)

learjet

‘Our first task was to set out and find the best possible domain names that would be instantly recognizable with the product or service they offered. Next, we began taking the ideas and suggestions from our broker friends, pilots, aircraft owners, product manufactures and various other people in the aviation industry and implemented them into our first website to display used airplanes: UsedAirplanes.com. ‘

That’s how the story of Mark Horne’s company, Flying Online, got started with domain names.

But that was just the beginning.

The Company History page and the Executive Bio page of Founder & President Mark J. Horne tell the whole story behind the company’s early beginnings through the acquisition and development of category-killing domain names (UsedAirplanes.com, Flying.com, UsedAircraft.com, Aircraftforsale.com) which have been a major factor in the company’s enormous success.

Here’s a look at the company’s history, which is still ‘taking off’.

The date was April 21, 2007. The place was Lakeland Florida. The event was the annual Sun-N-Fun. Several manufacturers and two aircraft brokers were talking to Mark Horne (our President) about various topics related to flying. At some point Mr. Horne explained what he had done in the Internet industry. Soon thereafter a question was asked of Mr. Horne: “Could you develop an effective and inexpensive online solution for our business?” Mr. Horne gave his word that he could and the rest is history……in the making.

Several months of research followed with the conclusion that the online aviation industry was made up of some really well done print and video publications but it was also very fragmented online.

Our first task was to set out and find the best possible domain names that would be instantly recognizable with the product or service they offered. Next, we began taking the ideas and suggestions from our broker friends, pilots, aircraft owners, product manufactures and various other people in the aviation industry and implemented them into our first website to display used airplanes: UsedAirplanes.com.

Thanks to the hard work of our development team, Laura Thompson and the support of our many friends throughout the aviation industry UsedAirplanes.com launched in July, 2009. Since this time, it has become highly trafficked and known as one of the most user-friendly websites to display aircraft for sale anywhere digital data can be viewed (desktops, laptops, digitalpads, smartphones etc.).

As the success of UsedAirplanes.com was becoming apparent, we had the opportunity to purchase the domain name Flying.com as well as its website. The press quickly termed Flying.com as a “category killer” domain name referring to its high-value within the space. What made this property and domain name extra special was the fact that it came with the conveyance of over 15 years of established rights. Flying.com will be consistently releasing new versions of the website as they are developed.

In May, 2010 we were very fortunate to have the opportunity to purchase UsedAircraft.com. This purchase was unique because it came with what brokers described as, “the best reputation for customer service and run by a very high class organization.” This domain name perfectly complements our UsedAirplanes.com property as well as meets our criteria of having a name that is instantly recognizable with the product it offers. We will launch our version of the website in late October 2010.

In September, 2010 good fortune came our way once again when, after a year of communicating with the owner of AircraftforSale.com he agreed to sell us his domain name. This acquisition gave us the instant ability to own a website that has a domain name that is identical to the highest searched keyword (search term) in the aircraft for sale space. In fact, over 200,000 people each month go to a search engine and search for “aircraft for sale.”

Since virtually every aviation enthusiast and aircraft buyer is now part of the new media (digital) generation, we will strive to continue to acquire and own the best possible domain names, produce the most user-friendly and technologically advanced websites and mobile applications (apps), remain strong and focused in all the social media channels and whenever possible look to the future and help shape it.

FantasyNews.com sells at Sedo for $8K on the heels of FantasyFaceoff.com sale

fantasy football

On the heels of FantasyFaceoff.com selling for $12,500 earlier this week, the domain name FantasyNews.com has sold for $8,299.  The sale price of $8,299 is a nice return for the seller, who purchased the domain name on Sedo in December 2009 for $1,900 according to DomainTools.

While the new owners of FantasyFaceoff.com are unknown, the URL now resolves to a “Coming Soon” page.  “Fantasy Face off” is one of many fantasy type games where players match up ”real people” such as sports stars and the players win based on the actual performance of the sports stars.

The domain name FantasyNews.com is currently registered to “Bloggy Network”, a home grown blog network that is 4 years old and according to the site’s home page: serves 3 million+ pageviews per month.  The network’s properties include tipz.com, bustedplay.com and nearly a dozen more properties.

$8,000 seems like a smart investment, especially if development plans are in the works.  According to a recent article that appeared on SFGate.com, fantasy sports is a $2 billion market.

There are between 20 and 30 million people in America who play fantasy football during the 17-week regular season with some of them participating in several leagues. But what do millions of loyal fans who spend up to nine hours a week on their team all have in common? They are part of an estimated $2 billion fantasy sports business that is growing quickly and has already caught the attention of advertising executives

Facemash.com sells for $30,201 at public auction on Flippa

facemash

As reported in early October, Facemash.com the domain name once owned by Mark Zuckerberg was put up for auction by its owner with a minimum starting bid of $8,000.  The domain name has been sold at public auction on Flippa for $30,201, a hefty profit for the owner who purchased the domain for just $799 in 2009.

At the time of this post, Facemash.com re-directs to FinancialEducation.com, a domain name that is currently parked at Sedo.

FaceSmash.com, the incorrect spelling of Mark Zuckerberg’s “Face Mash” was put up for auction by its owner, too.  The owner tried capitalizing on the buzz surrounding “The Social Network” movie as well, but didn’t fare too well at eBay auction

The winning bid pulled in just over $200.

5 domains benefiting from the Facebook boom

There are a number of interesting web sites that benefit off the success of Facebook.  Domain names that use “Facebook” in their URL continue to get a whole lot more valuable as Facebook continues its’ rise.

Did you know that before expanding Facebook beyond college students, the plan was to expand the social networking service to high schoolers?  Facebook planned to use FacebookHigh.com, the only problem was, the owner wanted too much money.  So Facebook passed on the domain.

I’ve chosen to write about 5 web sites that use “Facebook” in their domain name which has helped lead these web sites to success, including one web site that was acquired by WebMediaBrands.

AllFacebook.com

The Unofficial Facebook Blog

AllFacebook.com is an unofficial Facebook blog that covers Facebook news, business and marketing.  Nick O’Neill, the Founder and writer for All Facebook and its parent company Social Times, sold the website and company to WebMediaBrands in 2009.   All Facebook is listed as a news source in Google News and the site receives as many as half a million visitors per month.

All Facebook posted an article earlier this week about the hoax domain name auction taking place for FaceSmash.com on eBay.  While the original domain Facemash.com has received a $19,000 bid on Flippa, an eBay seller is trying to sell FaceSmash.com as the original domain name used by Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook.  The auction listing for the hoax domain FaceSmash.com has a current bid of $990 on Ebay, despite the seller having (0) feedback.

InsideFacebook.com

Inside Facebook

Taken straight from the Inside Facebook About page:

Inside Facebook is an independent service of Inside Network, the first company dedicated to providing news and market research to the Facebook platform and social gaming ecosystem. Based in Palo Alto, California, Inside Facebook focuses on Facebook and the Facebook Platform for developers and marketers. Inside Facebook was started by Justin Smith in April 2006.

The blog receives as many as 250,000 unique visitors per month, and it regularly receives mentions in major Technology news sources.  The founder of Inside Facebook, Justin Smith, seems to know a thing or two about domain names.  Justin owns insidesocialgames.com, insidenetwork.com, insidesocialapps.com, along with other domain names including his very own name and hack:  JustinSmith.com and Just.in.

FacebookEmoticons.com and FacebookSmileys.com

Facebook emoticons

Emoticons are widely used in apps and web sites all over the internet.  The icons portray the writer’s mood or facial expression.

Run on WordPress, Facebook Emoticons receives over 100,000 visitors per month.  The prviate company that owns and operates Facebook Emoticons, also appears to operate another similar site called Facebook Smileys, which uses FacebookSmileys.com.  That site, receives almost 50,000 unique visitors per month according to Compete.

FacebookLayouts.com

Facebook Layouts

According to the site’s About page: “Facebooklayouts.com covers topics relating to the look, feel and customization of Facebook. Topics include Facebook layouts, colors, Facebook interactivity and customizing Facebook’s experience.”

As of the last Compete traffic ranking, Facebook Layouts reached nearly 100,000 unique visitors per month.
