Cloud domain registrations peaked day after WWDC kickoff, tumble over 50%

Apple iCloud

As news of Apple’s unveiling of the iCloud at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 6 reached the masses in the news and on the internet, the pace of domain registrations with the word “cloud” in the name picked up.

The single day demand for ‘cloud’ domains finally peaked the day after the kickoff of WWDC on June 7, with 758 new domain registrations tallied.

As I wrote about on June 1, the long awaited “official” confirmation that Apple had acquired iCloud.com sparked a mini internet land rush for cloud domain names, a prediction made by many in 2010.  448 cloud domains were registered on June 1 alone, with well over 100 of the names including the keyword “icloud”.  News of Apple’s iCloud has even prompted people to file new trademark applications for words lik gCloud, YouCloud, and CloudStream.

According to DomainTools Trademark Alert service, the tool I used to track the numbers, June 8 recorded 720 new registrations, but by Saturday June 11, registrations had dropped to 316.

The cloud craze has seen thousands of new registrations in a couple weeks time, and there’s no shortage of questionable domains that make you ask yourself, “What was that person thinking?”, as noted by the Editor of DomainGang in a recent post.

Here’s a look at the 758 domains registered the day after WWDC, with a big chunk of registrations centered on “icloud”.

People are storming to the internet to register Cloud domains

storm clouds

The long awaited “official” confirmation that Apple had indeed acquired iCloud.com from Xcerion has begun another internet land rush for cloud domain names, a prediction made by many in 2010 that has now come true.

Individuals and organizations have been finding available ‘cloud’ domain names that show interest is on the rise.

On May 29, 2001, according to the website DomainTools, 185 new ‘cloud’ domains were registered.

By May 31, that number rose to 256 new registrations a day, including several “icloud” domain names such as icloudupload.com, icloudreview.net, icloudmeme.com, and over a dozen more.

To get an idea of the names people are buying, here’s the list of names from May 31.

[UPDATE:  June 2nd, 2011 4:13 AM EST:  According to DomainTools, on June 1, 2011 nearly 500 “cloud” domain names were registered — 448 to be exact.  A quick scan of the list shows that well over 100 of the names use the keyword “icloud”.]

$4.5 million iCloud.com domain name may switch owners soon

Apple iCloud

More details continue to emerge about Apple’s iCloud music service which reports say will be unveiled on the web at icloud.com — a domain name the company reportedly paid $4.5 million for ownership of from Swedish cloud computing company Xcerion.

According to a report on Thursday by BusinessWeek called ‘Apple’s Deals May Transform Digital Music’, the company could preview its cloud plans as early as June at Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.

The sold out Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, which takes place June 6-10, showcases the latest innovations and the newest technologies in iOS and Mac OS X.

That’s just a week away.

However, if the rumors are true that Apple will be running the service online at icloud.com, the company is running short on time to have its website up and running.

As many have already noted, the domain name is still registered to Xcerion and it continues to forward to Xcerion’s Cloudme.com, an online digital storage service.

   Record created on 18-Dec-2007.

Has the deal fallen apart, or will the name finally switch hands in the coming days?

Apple’s own website has no information online about its icloud.  As of today, neither icloud.apple.com nor apple.com/icloud resolve to a working page.

[UPDATE May 31st, 2011:  Apple issued a press release announcing the company would unveil iCloud at the Worldwide Developers Conference beginning on Monday, June 6.]
