Square Enix Ltd. files ‘Core’ trademark for the provision of online game services

Square Enix

Square Enix Limited has filed a curious trademark application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for “Core”.

The goods and services covered by the filing (serial no. 85421330) include “Entertainment services, namely, the provision of online computer game services; online computer game services provided by means of an internet portal; information and advisory services relating thereto.”

Could the company be renaming its online store to ‘Core’ and enhancing it as well, similar to what Electronic Arts did with Origin?

Unlike previous filings out of Tokyo, Square Enix Ltd. is the European division of Square Enix Holdings Co. based in London, and it publishes content from the Square Enix Group.

Electronic Arts readying Origin API for developers? Registers origin-api.com

Origin API

Last week Electronic Arts said it planned to host third-party content on Origin, its direct download service that lets you purchase and play EA games.  The move would better position Origin to compete with services like Steam that offer third party titles.

While no word on titles or availability has been given, Electronic Arts has registered the domain name origin-api.com, in a possible move to release something like a Steamworks API, to help developers with developing and publishing a game or mod on Origin.

Origin-api.com was registered on Friday, September 16, 2011 and doesn’t resolve to a web site at the time of this posting.

Square Enix registers another Army Corps of Hell domain after teaser launch

Army Corps of Hell game

It appears the new Square Enix teaser site called “A Brand New Title of Hell” will be for a previously registered European trademark “Army Corps of Hell”.

Following the launch of the teaser site, Square Enix has apparently registered the domain name armycorpsofhellgame.com through Corporation Service Company (CSC), a corporate domain registrar that provides trademark services — further solidifying rumors that the teaser site is for “Army Corps of Hell”.

Square Enix has been using CSC for several of its domain purchases, as reported earlier in the week with its finalfantasyxiii-3.com purchase

Square Enix already owns armycorpsofhell.com, a name it registered in 2010 according to Whois records, however at the time this story being published, there is no website online for either armycorpsofhell.com or armycorpsofhellgame.com.
