What can $1 million buy in today’s Domain Market?

"Dating"
You better rethink your buying strategy if you were planning to buy Dating.com. The domain name in 2010 would cost $1.75 million.

In today’s challenging economy where jobs are being shed and unemployment is at a record high, spending your money can be a difficult decision.

But despite the harsh economic climate that has prevented many companies and individuals from buying up domains, big price tags for domain names have returned in 2010, with the most expensive deal in 2010 valuating the gambling Domain Slots.com at $5.5 Million.

The Slots.com purchase was made by Billionaire Calvin Ayre of Bodog Brand.

But the person with $1 million in their wallet who is ready to invest, couldn’t even afford to give Slots.com a moment’s consideration.

What could that money buy?

What’s astonishing is that $1 million wouldn’t get you very far in the Top 10 Domain Sales of 2010 according to the sales charts over at DNJournal.

You could afford to acquire BoardGames.com and Poker.ca, leaving you with $150,000 in change, just enough to buy Cheesecake.com at $100,000 and GoFish.com for $50,000.  Or some combination thereof.

$1 million in the above scenario would get you: BoardGames.com, Poker.ca, Cheesecake.com and GoFish.com.

Or, you could also just buy one domain — Poker.org, yes .org, for $1 million and call it a day.

Depending on where your interest lies, that $1 million won’t go far.  It costs big money, after all, to build up a portfolio of category-killing domain names.

The cost to do business in 2010 is not cheap if you’re on the buying side, but if you’re on the selling side, that’s where the money comes in.

If you had $1 million to spend on domain names, would you spend it on names already listed in DN Journal’s 2010 YTD Top 100 Sales Chart?  Let us know your thoughts in the comments.

.CO speculators turn hand registered domains into quick profits, already

"Oprah Winfrey"
Oprah Winfrey's own moniker, OprahWinfrey.co is up for auction at Sedo. Oprah's official web site runs on Oprah.com. The OprahWinfrey.com web address doesn't even resolve.

Many of the .co domain names registered in the last week were web addresses purchased by speculators in the quest for quick profits.

The .co domain, which reportedly has over 366,000 domains registered to date, could prove to be lucrative.

No matter your opinion of the domain, everyone from Twitter to Mike Mann to Francois Carrillo have walked away with .co domains.

.Co domains, like any new domain, are deemed by many to be risky, but that hasn’t stopped the swarm of speculators, who are quickly turning profits on websites like Flipping.co and Sedo.

The .co has only been available a short time after being released to the general public on July 20th, but Sedo and Flipping.co both have several current auctions with active bidding.

Active .co Auctions

Yesterday, I wrote about Flipping.co and the website’s active .CO auctions.  Now here’s a look at active .co Sedo auctions that have recently appeared online.

car-insurance.co – current bid $1,200 USD
touchscreens.co – current bid $2,500 USD
oprahwinfrey.co – current bid $500 USD
sugarcane.co – current bid $187 USD

While these few names represent an infinitesimal fraction of the hundreds of thousands of domain names registered, the .co domain could revitalize sales for new domain investors who weren’t part of the .com landrush, which has had numerous rags-to-riches stories since the nineties.

OutdoorFountains.com receives $22,000 bid at GreatDomains

"Outdoor Fountain"
The phrase "Outdoor Fountains" has an exact monthly search volume of 74,000 searches according to the Google AdWords Keyword Tool.

The domain name OutdoorFountains.com has received 1 bid at GreatDomains for $22,000.

While $22,000 may sound like a lot of money to plunk down for some investors, it’s not a lot of money for the sole bidder who could very well be a company selling outdoor fountains as a product —- a company looking to get a competitive edge in the search engines.  Not to mention, a memorable domain name.

The $22,000 bid met the seller’s reserve price.  So now the name is in public auction for the next 4 days.

The $22,000 bid, is also well below Valuate.com’s appraisal – which puts the name at $100,000.

Next Navigation Pty Ltd, a web development and online sales company, based in Australia owns the domain.  The company also owns names like Salaries.com.

Sedo could be continuing another strong week of sales.  Last week the company owned nearly every spot in the DN Journal Top 20 chart, including the top spot with 029.com selling for $110,000.

Notable “Outdoor” sales

Outdoor domain name sales have done okay over the years.  Overall, there have been very few publicly reported sales according to NameBio, but the sales are listed demostrate strong interest in “Outdoor” domains as Product domains.  Previous sales include:

OutdoorWear.com – $18,819
OutdoorChaircushions.com – $4,400
OutdoorCarpets.com – $3,300
OutdoorLCD.com – $1,100
Outdoorfurniturecushion.com – $1,000

Dress-up games for girls

The type of clothes they dress up in often resembles who they are trying to be, either adults' clothing or special play clothes designed specifically for dress-up like feather boas and jewelry."
