Empires and Allies: Another missed domain name opportunity for Zynga?

Empires and Allies by Zynga

Zynga announced the launch of another game this week called Empires and Allies, its first combat strategy game which has more features than any other Zynga game to date.

The company which is known for acquiring domain names on the aftermarket like Cityville.com and for buying never-before-registered domain names like HangmanwithFriends.com and FarmvilleExpress.com, may have another missed opportunity on its hands by failing to get the domain name EmpiresandAllies.com, a domain that was first registered in September 2010, along with the dotnet and dotorg versions of the name.

The company put out news on its blog about the launch of Empires and Allies, which included different links as to how to connect.  Play Empires & Allies at: http://www.zynga.com/empires, follow Empires & Allies on Twitter at @EmpiresAllies, or “Like” Empires & Allies on Facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/EmpiresAndAllies.

The missed opportunity

You’ll notice in the company’s announcement there’s no mention of a separate website address for the game.

That’s because Zynga doesn’t appear to own the .com, .net, or .org domain names, which are currently sitting behind WHOIS privacy at GoDaddy.

The .com doesn’t resolve at the time of this story, while the .net and .org are both parked at GoDaddy.  While it’s entirely possible Zynga may own the domains but hasn’t developed a website, all three names are registered to a yahoo address according to GoDaddy, not a Zynga address which is typically the case seen with Zynga’s domain names.

Could it be that an insider registered the domain names in the midst of development?

Zynga domains

Whether an insider registered the domains or not, Zynga is facing another problem on the web — most domain names are already taken.

A NamePros member yesterday posted a questionable message on the forum asking other members to appraise the .us version of the domain that they had purchased, noting in the post that the following domains were already registered:

empiresandallies.com
empiresandallies.info
empiresandallies.net
empiresandallies.org
empiresandallies.mobi
empiresandallies.us
empiresandallies.biz
empiresandallies.ca
empiresandallies.mx
empiresandallies.eu
empiresandallies.in
empiresanda…com.mx
empiresandallies.nl
empiresandallies.se

The member ends the post by saying, “By the way, Zynga doesn’t have the trademark yet, so Zynga can’t WIPO it due to Reverse Domain Hijacking laws.”

I wouldn’t be so sure about that.

If you track the cases at WIPO, you’d know that Zynga has been successful.

Game Rumors: Zynga registers Mojitomo domain names, files for trademark

mojitomo

While rumors of Zynga’s imminent IPO continue to spread across news sites and blogs, the company appears to be busy behind the scenes working on a project called Mojitomo.

The company filed a trademark application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on May 24, 2011.

Here’s a look at the application from the USPTO website.

‘Mojitomo’ domain names

Days before on May 21, it looks like the company registered several domain names using MarkMonitor, a brand protection company used by many of the world’s biggest companies.   Zynga’s own moniker, zynga.com, uses the same privacy and brand protection services provided by MarkMonitor and DNStination.

The domains included  mojitomo.com, mojitomo.net, and mojitomo.org, none of which had ever been registered before.

While I have no proof that Zynga is the registrant of the domain names, there’s a very strong chance considering the names were registered only days before the trademark was filed.

I’ve searched the internet using the keyword “mojitomo”, but I couldn’t find any hints as to what the name could be used for.  Except for the Cuban drink Mojito, not much esle shows up.  There doesn’t appear to be any stories about Zynga and the word mojitomo, aside from this article.

Could Zynga’s  Japan studio Unoh Games have a game in development?

ModernWarfare3.com gets thousands of Facebook fans, growth continues. Site not affiliated with Call of Duty

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Attack on New York City

The owner of ModernWarfare3.com has gained thousands of fans on Facebook and is adding hundreds per day following the news that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will be released this November.

The domain name and website, which I have written about previously here and here, has been adding new features in the past few days including a newsletter for announcements, videos, pre-order links, and a forum that is under construction.

The website has the feel of an official Call of Duty site, that is, until you scroll the bottom and see the hard-to-read text that says: “The website ModernWarfare3.com is not associated, affiliated, endorsed or sponsored by the  creators or publishers of the game (we like them a lot though.)”.

With MW3 buzz all over the web, expect this site to get a lot of direct navigation (type-in) traffic.

If you haven’t see what all the buzz is about, here’s a look at the world premiere trailer.

ModernWarfare3.com: Cashing in on the buzz of top-selling videogame franchise

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 concept art Sandman

Some companies just don’t get it when it comes to domain names.

Back in January I wrote about Activision missing out on Modern Warfare domain names.  Though the company does own ModernWarfare2.com, the company doesn’t own ModernWarfare.com and it missed out on a slew of other domain names early on.

Not owning the exact match domain names hasn’t hurt sales, but it has certainly helped a few fans and domain owners cash in one way or another on the popularity of the first-person shooter game.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 Buzz

This week information and dates were leaked on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 to online gaming magazine, Kotaku.  Now, everyone is talking about Modern Warfare 3.  Though the buzz has been going on for several months, one might think Activision would buy the matching web address now that the cat is out of the bag.  Not likely.

Even threats of killing a clown can’t change Activision’s mind as seen with ModernWarfare4.com – a controversy that made headlines

It doesn’t appear Activision has bothered registering any related domain names recently.  Besides, most have already been taken by other people- modernwarfarethree.com, codmodernwarfare3.com, callofdutymodernwarfare3.com and more, making it unlikely the company could find an easy-to-remember domain name specifically for Modern Warfare 3.

Then there’s callofdutymodernwarfare.com…

The domain name is currently in a RedemptionPeriod status, meaning, the domain name expired, and the registry is waiting for 30 days as a precautionary measure before releasing it.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean Activision will land the name.  You can bet hardcore Call of Duty fans are already eyeing it.  Since the beginning of May, several Modern Warfare domain names have been registered by individuals and organizations.  Here’s a sample: Call-of-Duty-Modern-Warfare-3.com, ModernWarfare3Fan.com, Modern-Warfare3.org, PlayModernWarfare3.com, NextModernWarfare.com, FreeCallofDutyModernWarfare3.com and ModernWarfarethree.com.

Next top ranking iOS game by Zynga, Hangman with Friends? Company registers hangmanwithfriends.com

Hangman with Friends

It appears gaming giant Zynga may have plans to develop the next top game to run on products like the iPhone and iPad.

The name of the game – Hangman with Friends, which would follow its wildly popular Words with Friends game that was voted the #1 favorite app by Wired Magazine in 2009 and played by millions.

Hangman, would likely work along the same lines as Words with Friends, the Scrabble-like word game that you can play with friends, but instead of Scrabble, players would compete by guessing a word or phrase one letter at a time.

Hangmanwithfriends.com

The company registered the domain name this week at GoDaddy according to Whois records.   Though the registrant information is hidden behind GoDaddy’s Private Registration service (Domains by Proxy), registrant information isn’t so private after all for customers paying for the service — as tweeted by Domain Name news in a recent Twitter message.  The same issue plagues many companies, not just GoDaddy.

GoDaddy’s account retrieval system currently displays a Zynga e-mail address (Email Address:****@zynga.com).

Games with Friends

Newtoy, which was one of many companies acquired by Zynga, originally developed Words with Friends and Chess with Friends.  In October 2010, Words with Friends reached 10 million downloads on the App store.

Zynga looks to be expanding its Games with Friends brands.  In April, the company filed for a trademark on “With Friends” according to Trademarkia.
