MusicGifter.com: Sony Music getting ready to launch music gift giving service

MusicGifter

Sony Music Entertainment is getting ready to launch a music gift giving service called MusicGifter.

The company launched a teaser page late yesterday on the web address MusicGifter.com, which  I had written about in late September after Sony first registered the domain name

While details are still lacking and the company hasn’t announced anything official, here’s what Sony Music Entertainment has to say about the service on its teaser page:

“MusicGifter is the ultimate destination for unique music gifts this holiday season. MusicGifter is putting the finishing touches on our website. We are almost ready, we hope you are prepared to experience the best in music gift giving. Until then, please leave us your email address and we will let you know as soon as we launch. From AC/DC to Yo-Yo Ma, you won’t want to miss it.”

You can sign up on the home page to be notified when the service launches.

How much did Motorola pay for RAZR.com? It finally owns it [UPDATED]

RAZR.com WHOIS

I recently wrote about Motorola buying up Motorola RAZR domains prior to its latest launch event, and also reported that Motorola had finally acquired the domain name MotorolaRAZR.com, seven years after the device’s first release.

Now, according to WHOIS records, Motorola has acquired the domain RAZR.com from its previous owner, Michael Putzier, who had been running a magnetic sign business on the web address for years (screen shot of website).

The amount paid for the domain is currently unknown since the negotations went on behind closed doors, but given the timing and circumstances, one can only imagine it wasn’t cheap.

I’ve reached out to the previous owner to learn more details about the transaction, and will update this post if I hear back.

Motorola has already begun re-directing RAZR.com to its Droid RAZR web page on Motorola.com.

[Updated, Oct. 24, 3:59 a.m.: Over the weekend, I received an e-mail from Mike Putzier, who wasn’t able to share the purchase price but offered more background on the story.

Mike writes:

I will not disclose the actual purchase price, but your readers might be interested to know razr.com was not as valuable as they might think.

I was fortunate enough to have owned Razr.com well before the Razr phone was created.  As such, even though Motorola Mobility now has the “razr” name locked down tight, they were very limited in what they could have done to get the domain name through litigation.  The same would not have been true for anyone else (other than Motorola Mobility) had they purchased the domain and tried to use it in any way related to the Razr line of phones.

We quietly co-existed and I always appreciated the fact that Motorola Mobility never tried to strong arm or drag me through litigation to force the issue.   Even with attorneys on both sides, we were able to reach an agreement within just a few short hours.  (As you might imagine, I have had a price in mind for a LONG time.)

Razr.com is now “home”, I was able to pay some bills, everyone is happy and no one had to ever type “WIPO”.

Our new domain is now RazrSigns.com.

Something new on the way? Groupon files trademark for ‘Groupon Reserve’

Groupon Reserve

It appears Groupon is getting ready to launch a new service called ‘Groupon Reserve’ that will augment the group buying giant’s portfolio of products.

On October 18, Groupon submitted the trademark application (Serial Number: 85450098) with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

The filing doesn’t reveal any details about the new product, since the goods and services listed are identical to many of the company’s previous filings.  “Promoting the goods and services of others via electronic communications that feature coupons, rebates, price-comparison information, product reviews, links to the retail websites of others, and discount information,” reads the application.

According to WHOIS records, Groupon also recently acquired the domain name grouponreserve.com from its previous owner Benjamin McKean, who first registered the domain on August 4, 2011.

The domain name switched hands this past week and is now registered to Groupon Inc.  I’ve reached out to Mr. McKean to learn more about the exchange and will update this post if I hear back.

Here’s a look at the WHOIS record that was last updated October 17.

Assassin’s Creed movie a done deal, according to Sony Pictures’ domains

Assassin's Creed Movie

Several tech blogs and news site have been buzzing for the last 24 hours since Variety broke the news that Sony Pictures was in the final negotations to develop a film franchise based on Ubisoft’s “Assassin’s Creed” videogame series.

While the deal hasn’t been officially confirmed by Sony or Ubisoft, that didn’t stop Sony Pictures from registering over a dozen “Assassin’s Creed” movie domain names such as assassinscreedthefilm.com.

All of the domain names were registered on October 20, a day before the Variety story was published.

Here’s a look at the full list of domain names:

assassins-creed-movie.com
assassins-creed.net
assassins-creedmovie.com
assassinscreed-film.com
assassinscreed-film.net
assassinscreed-movie.com
assassinscreed-movie.net
assassinscreed-thefilm.com
assassinscreed-thefilm.net
assassinscreed-themovie.com
assassinscreed-themovie.net
assassinscreedfilm.com
assassinscreedfilm.net
assassinscreedthefilm.com
assassinscreedthefilm.net
assassinscreedthemovie.net

Although the domains were registered before either company has even announced a partnership, Sony Pictures must have been pretty confident that the deal was certain.

That, or the deal was already done.

Is Google launching an initiative for war veterans? [UPDATED]

With President Obama announcing the end of the Iraq war and his challenge to U.S. businesses to hire 100,000 veterans or their spouses, it appears Google might be stepping up to the plate to assist Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans in their transition to the civilian workforce.

Yesterday, on the same day of the President’s announcement that all troops will be withdrawn from Iraq by the end of 2011, Google registered half a dozen domains related to ‘Google for Veterans’ like googleforveterans.com, googleveterans.com, and googleforvets.com.

The full list of registrations include:

googleforveterans.com
googleforveterans.org
googleforvets.com
googleveterans.com
googleveterans.org
googlevets.com

Google certainly wouldn’t be the first company to launch an initiative.

Last March, Microsoft for example, building on its Elevate America program, announced an initiative to help veterans and their spouses prepare for the civilian work force.

The company hasn’t said anything official about its “Google for Veterans” program.  Google may be planning the announcement to coincide with Veterans Day 2011, which is only a few weeks away.

Update on November 11 @ 9:00am EST: Google has unveiled its ‘Google for veterans and families’ website on http://googleforveterans.com/.  Google writes: “This site was made by some veterans, family of veterans and friends who work at Google. We understand the challenges of serving, coming home and transitioning to civilian life. We’ve been there. Some of us are still figuring it out. Here are some free Google products we’ve gathered together that have made our lives easier. Hopefully, they can do the same for you.”
